How to do Kihon Keiko Ho
While there is no substitute for learning in the Dojo, there are a few ways to improve at home on what you have learned.
For a list of the movements for both Kakarite and Motodatchi you can read
this pdf document.
You can also find youtube videos illustrating Kihon Keiko Ho:
This is good but slightly out of date due to recent changes to numbers 5 and 8
A general guide to Kendo Equipment use and care
This is a very good guide to looking after and putting on all Kendo equipment.
It comes in five parts:
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Part 5
or download them all in a zipped file:
equipment.zip
Parts 1 - 3 are the most relevant for beginners: containing shinai maintenance and how to wear and fold the Hakama and Kendogi.

A guide to different aspects of Kendo
Our parent club, Edinburgh Kendo Club, has a great guide that includes many aspects of Kendo including: Etiquette, equipment maintenance, bowing, footwork, kamae and waza. It also has a glossary of translations which will help you understand more in the dojo. Finally it also has some information on the meaning of Kendo, which may help you outside of the dojo as well.
This is well worth a look:
EKC Manual
Folding the Hakama
There are many ways of folding the Hakama and even more websites and videos showing you how to do so.
To start you off
here is a link to a good explanation of the way we fold Hakama at EUKC. It also includes a description of what each fold means. You can find more with
google.
How to wear Kendogi and Hakama
Probably the best way to learn here is to have a combination of written and video instructions. So use the description in part 2 of the Kendo Equipment Manual mentioned in another FAQ with
this video made by e-bogu's CEO Taro Ariga, 7th Dan (There is a whole set of videos by Ariga which you might find of interest)
Translations
There may be lots of words you hear in the Dojo that you do not understand - especially if you have missed a couple of sessions. To catch up you can read the glossary found at the bottom of the
EKC manual. It is also worth reading the rest of this guide to get a more in depth knowledge of the terms.
Further Questions?
If you have any further questions you can either:
- Ask at the Dojo
- send an email to webmaster@euck.org and I will get the answer for you.
- or google it. There are plenty of sites showing and describing how to do almost everything.
