Kendo is the martial art of Japanese fencing, the 'way of the sword'.
With deep roots back to the feudal sword schools of Japan, its stated aim is to
'discipline the human character through the application of the principles of the Katana [sword]'.
Modern Kendo has a competitive sporting element with fast paced, full contact sparring.
Even with such competition, however, Kendo maintains its strong connection with tradition, evident in its etiquette, equipment and training.
