Ireland Cork taikai 2011
**Updated**
On 24th February 13 people from Edinburgh University kendo club travelled to Ireland for an Irish kendo competition. We had 8 people competing for team Edinburgh 1, 2 and 3, and 5 beginners who did their best for their helping out with the refereeing.
In the individuals, Rudiah came second place working his way through the strong Irish.
In the lady's, both Anusiya and Erika didn't make the second round.
For the team competition, Edinburgh team 1 came to the semi-finals, and Koji, Neil, and Rudiah earned a medal.
Edinburgh team 2 clashed with two well trained teams in the pools. They fought bravely, but lost in the end.
Edinburgh team 3 had passed the pool with Tak-Sun's first ever point in a match (and his first time entering a taikai as-well!). Unfortunately, We got knocked out in the next match.
Our gradings for all participants on this trip went very well, with Rudiah becoming 3rd dan, Koji 2nd dan, Matthew 1st dan. The beginners tried out for Kyu-grades (Goes from 9 to 1), with Mike, Kristine, Laura receiving 4th kyu, and Arman achieving an 3rd kyu. Neil turned out as a helper for 3rd dan since he couldn't participate this time, but was told his skill was well enough to achieve a 3 dan.
We all had great time, please read the full report when it comes out!
The full report will be posted up here soon.

Mumeishi 3's Report
A few weeks ago, a few of our senior Edinburgh University kendo club members have participated in the Mumeishi 3's competition held in London, representing the only team from Edinburgh in the competition.
The full report can be seen in the extension, and the short summary is as follows:
The Mumeishi 3's is a huge event where universities and clubs gather their strongest members to form a team of three. The competition follows a knock-out system where a team has to continue winning till the finals without losing. The Edinburgh team composed of Neil, Gary and Ruairidh went against team Kagami Shin B in the first round. Ruairidh won his opponent with 2 men cuts, Gary maintaining a draw, and Neil taking down his by debana kote and a hiki-men cut.
In the next pool against Portsmouth’s Sempo, we drew in our first two fights, followed by our third tie. This led to an extended death match of one competitor from each team. Our team had Neil in front line, and the fight intensified with close points. The match ended with Portsmouth's win, but showed an impressive effort from our side.

Guy Fawks night
Hello Kendo friends,
On Friday 5th November (yes, that's this week), the club is setting off fireworks to celebrate the night. The cost is 2 pounds, location written on poster. Guy Fawks night is one of the important days for the Scottish tradition where people go crazy with fireworks. This would be an enjoyable night, so come along.

Guests from IKSU- reflecting on the day

We were grateful to have with us Stefan with Sandan and Richard with Ikkyu from IKSU kendo club (Sweden) visiting our dojo a while ago. The manga-face picture taken on the day has arrived and posted up. Stephan was our other sandan in the session, and was very prolific experience for us all in learning where we needed improvements. For those who are interested, you can see Stephen Sandström's fights on youtube videos.
